Changing your NetID password
You must change your NetID password once a year. If you know your password (i.e., it's current and active), it's an easy procedure to change it.
Change your password (Faculty/Staff/Student/Affiliate)
- Visit NUValidate at https://nuvalidate.northwestern.edu
- Enter your NetID and NetID password, then click Login
- Follow the password change prompts and click Change Password
If you've forgotten your NetID password, or you accidentally let it expire without changing it, you'll need to reset it. If you have previously established answers to security questions, you can reset your NetID password yourself.
Self-reset your forgotten or expired password
- Visit NUValidate at www.northwestern.edu/login
- Enter your NetID, leave the password blank, and click Forgot Password?
- Answer two of your security questions
- Follow the password change prompts and click Submit
If you can't answer your security questions, or if you haven't set up answers to security questions, choose one of the options below to get an activation code so you can reset your NetID password.
Obtain an activation code...
remotely by verifying your identity via webcam (Faculty/Staff/Student/Affiliate)
If your computer has a webcam, the IT Support Center can use its screen-sharing tool (Bomgar) to remotely connect to your computer. Call the Support Center 847-491-4357 (1-HELP) to verify your identity with your Wildcard or other photo identification while you're on the phone. Once you've confirmed your identity, the IT Support Center will generate an activation code so you can reset your password.
by visiting a NetID password reset location (Faculty/Staff/Student/Affiliate)
In Evanston: Bring your Wildcard or other photo identification to one of the Support Center locations (1800 Sherman Ave, first floor or University Library, first floor). You will receive an activation code that you can use to log in to NUValidate and update your NetID password. A password change station is available so you can change your password on site.
In Chicago: Bring your Wildcard or other photo identification to the Northwestern IT NetID Support Kiosk located in the University Services Parking/Wildcard Office (Abbott Hall 100). Using the phone located at the kiosk, you can contact Northwestern IT directly to assist with remotely resetting your password.
from your school or departmental NetID administrator (Faculty/Staff/Affiliate)
Many schools and large departments have designated NetID administrators who are able to generate NetID activation codes for faculty and staff within that school or department. You may find that seeking this person out is more convenient for you than other options. Please contact your department or dean's office to see if this option is available to you.
by using an intermediary contact (Faculty/Staff/Affiliate)
If you are a faculty, staff, or affiliate who can't visit either password reset location, the IT Support Center will also accept an email request from your academic department chair, administrative department director, or dean's office. One of these authorities who is familiar with you should send a request to email@example.com. The IT Support Center will then give this authorized person an activation code for you; they should then pass that activation code to you so you can reset your NetID password.
via email by sending two forms of photo ID (Faculty/Staff/Student/Affiliate)
If you are away from campus and don't have an intermediary, the Support Center will accept a scan of two forms of photo identification (e.g., Wildcard and driver's license). Send the scans as PDF or JPG attachments via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. The IT Support Center will then send you an activation code so you can reset your NetID password.
