Setting up your @northwestern.edu (Exchange) account on iOS (iPhone or iPad)

You can use either Microsoft Outlook for iOS or the native Mail and Calendar apps to access your Northwestern Exchange account. While you may be more familiar with Mail and Calendar, you will have a much better experience using Outlook. However, the choice of which app to use is yours. Instructions for configuring both can be found below. Just make sure you don't use the OWA for iPhone app because it lacks essential functionality.

Microsoft Outlook for iOS

  1. When you launch Outlook for the first time, you will be prompted to enter an email address; enter your @northwestern.edu email address, then tap Add Account
  2. In the Exchange configuration screen, toggle Use Advanced Settings
  3. Enter the following:
    • Password: your NetID password
    • Description: Northwestern
    • Server: mail.northwestern.edu
    • Domain: ads
    • Username: your NetID
  4. Tap Sign in

iOS Mail App

  1. Tap Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Add Account (iOS 11 and above)
  2. Tap Exchange
  3. Enter the following information:
    • Email: your full @northwestern.edu account 
    • Description: Exchange
  4. Tap Next to verify your account
  5. Tap Sign In
  6. When a window pop ups prompting for a username and password, enter the following:
    • Username: ads\[your NetID]
    • Password: your NetID password
  7. Tap Accept
  8. Select which functions of your Exchange account you want to synchronize with your phone, then click Save
  9. By default, your iPhone or iPad will only sync mail that is three days old. After three days, your iPhone or iPad will remove the email from your phone's memory (but not from the mail server). To change this setting:

    1. Tap Settings
    2. Tap Accounts
    3. Tap your Northwestern Email Account
    4. Tap Mail Days to Sync
    5. Select any option
