Setting up VPN on Android

The Northwestern VPN allows you to connect to the Northwestern network when you're off campus. There are two VPN clients you can use: (1) the native VPN client that comes with your operating system, and (2) the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

Due to a number of factors, VPN clients may experience difficulties establishing or maintaining a connection in some situations or locations. Common examples include public wireless networks at cafes and bookstores, restricted networks at hotels and conference centers, and countries with restricted Internet access policies. In most situations where one of the VPN clients won't work properly, the other one will.

We recommend you configure both clients to give you flexibility, and the ability to connect to the Northwestern VPN regardless of your location.

Native VPN

  1. Select Settings > Wireless and Networks > More... > VPN
  2. Select the + icon at the top of the screen to add a new VPN network.
  3. In the Edit VPN profile screen, enter the following information:
    • Name: Northwestern VPN
    • Type: L2TP/IPSec PSK
    • Server Address:
    • IPSec pre-shared key: northwesternvpn
  4. Tap Save. Northwestern VPN should now appear in the list of available VPN networks.
  5. To connect to the Northwestern VPN, select Northwestern VPN and enter your NetID and NetID password.

Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Download Cisco AnyConnect from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open Cisco AnyConnect, then accept the End User License Agreement.
  3. Select Connections > Add VPN Connection....
  4. In the Add VPN Connection screen, enter the following:
    • Description: Northwestern VPN
    • Server Address:
  5. Select Done, then go back to the main Cisco AnyConnect screen.
  6. Select the slider next to AnyConnect VPN to enable the VPN connection. You will be prompted for a username and password. Enter your NetID for Username and your NetID password for Password.
  7. In the Banner popup, select Accept.
  8. In the Connection request popup, select OK.
